This page explains what a broadband filter is for, presents the different filters available and shows how to install them.
The procedures explained in this section :
what is a filter for ?
The signal carried over your broadband line is a combination of different frequencies:
- Classic (analog) phones, fax machines, and Minitel lines use low frequencies.
- Broadband modems and the Livebox use high frequencies.
To avoid mutual interference, the frequencies need to be separated by installing a broadband filter.
types of filters
There are two types of filters:
aDistributed filters: the most common
As long as your phone line does not use more than 3 plugs (check for plugs located behind a piece of furniture), each wall outlet connected to a device (telephone, fax, Minitel, etc.) must be equipped with one (and only one) distributed filter.
There are two models of distribued filter:
- Filters adapted to T-jacks. They are provided in your Livebox or Modem packs and available in Orange shops.

- Plug the ADSL cable connected to your Livebox into the ADSL port and plug the filter into the wall outlet. |
- Filters for RJ-45 jacks, used in recent housing. They are available in Orange shops.

- Plug the ADSL cable connected to your Livebox into the ADSL port of the filter and insert the plug into the wall outlet. |
bMaster filters
If more than 3 plugs are used or when there is a burglar alarm using the phone line, we recommend a technician install a master filter at the telephone line entry point.
A master filter separates the signals before the entry point of your phone line.
A master filter is also recommended if you have an alarm that uses the phone line.

Regardless of the number of plugs required for your setup, a master filter guarantees better service quality.
instructions for installation
Installation instructions differ depending on your specific installation:
aAll your devices are connected to the same phone jack:
In that case, you just need to plug a single filter into the wall outlet that you are going to use.
You can plug the broadband cable (RJ-11) leading to your modem or (Livebox) router and your classic phone cable into the filter.
bIf you use up to 3 phone jacks:
You should install a filter on each outlet used, then depending on your needs, plug the connecting cables (RJ-11, RJ-45, or dual-port jack) into the filters.
cIf you use more than 3 phone jacks or have an alarm that uses the phone line:
Distributed filters cannot be used.
You need to have a master filter installed at the entry point of your phone line (and NOT on each of the phone outlets).
We recommend this operation be done by a technician as it can prove to be complex.
errors to avoid
1Make sure you do not place two filters on the same connection, for example:

- Two filters (one plugged into the other) should be separated before use.
- A filter on each end of an ADSL extension cord
- A filter on the outlet of a line that already has a master filter (check to see if a technician has already installed a master filter previously).
2If you use a phone extension cord, the filter should be placed at the end of the extension cord and not in the wall outlet.
Likewise, a poor quality, or especially long, extension cord (over 5 meters) can substantially weaken the quality of the signal.
We recommend avoiding the use of extension cords.
3Avoid equipping non-used outlets (outlets not connected to a terminal) with distributed filters.
